Reminder - Discoveries @ Hugh's Room Feb.2
For Immediate Release REMINDER DISCOVERIES TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 2, 2010 • 8:30PM Our first DISCOVERIES of 2010 will be taking place on Tuesday, February 2. This series has become much sought-after for artists – it’s not easy to get to play in the highly regarded Hugh’s Room, and the chosen artists understand the responsibility of making sure they bring out as many people as they possibly can. Hugh’s Room continues to partner with us and their great support is so much appreciated, as is yours. And we lied about how long we’ve been at this! We’re actually into our sixth not fifth year – how time flies when you’re having fun! There continues to be no shortage of artists looking for the opportunity to be a part of the DISCOVERIES series. ANDREW COLE is a talented songwriter who was born in Toronto and grew up in Liverpool. Andrew is a self-taught guitar player with a unique and powerful vision and voice. Andrew returned to Canada to expand his writing after winning North West Artist of the year 2003 in the UK. He has combined his Canadian roots and Brit rock sensibility into something quite original and exciting. His confidence and sense of humour are infectious and will keep you listening to this passionate musician. We are highly anticipating his first studio release which reflects the music he has aspired to play since his teenage band days in Liverpool. Andrew was assisted by his friend, seasoned producer Bill Bell (Tom Cochrane, Jason Mraz, Justin Nozuka) to create this inspired, self-revealing album. We are honoured to have him here with us to perform material from his new album JENNA GLATT is one very talented teen who joins us from Ottawa. She, like so many young people who want to make a success in the arts, is a hard worker with consistently high marks and a strong desire to succeed as a vocalist. Since an early age Jenna has competed successfully in many vocal competitions from the Greater Ottawa Kiwanis Music festival to the National Association of Teachers of Singing Vocal Festival, as well as winning several dance awards. She was a Gold Award recipient at MusicFest Canada Nationals and was invited to participate in the National Arts Centre Broadband Jazz Masterclass Series with Peter Eldridge from the Manhattan School of Music. With a huge voice and grace and maturity beyond her years Jenna has astounded audiences and created a memorable sound that is sure to impress for years to come. She has an incredibly engaging stage presence and was well received at the Ottawa International Jazz festival for three consecutive years. Jenna’s versatility has impressed audiences and won her trophies and scholarships for competing in the classical, folk, musical theatre, and pop categories. Her passion for the art is impressive and we are excited to have her with us at Hugh’s Room. www.jennaglatt.com JANA KEELEY is coming all the way from Victoria to participate in this edition of Discoveries and we’re really looking forward to welcoming her to Toronto. Her family raised cattle and she is an experienced rancher herself. She has played recently at the Grand Forks Folk Festival and joins us in Toronto to promote her much anticipated studio release “Trouble.” Working with BC Juno award winner Joby Baker, she has created a unique, honest and compelling album. With an angelic voice, lovely melodies and gritty guitar her sensibilities are revealed. Her positive energy and maturity have impressed audiences and led to an invitation to perform her single, A Song for Glen, at the Professional Bullriders’ Association finals in Las Vegas for an audience of 20, 000. Songs from her recent release have already received air play on UK’s BBC Radio 2 and have created a great buzz for Jana. She plans to tour across Canada starting in May 2010, and we look forward to her return to Toronto. www.janakeeley.com J P SAXE is a sixteen year old singer/songwriter with a great career ahead of him. His early childhood was filled with classical music before he began playing jazz and rock piano at the age of thirteen. His music has been inspired by his involvement with Free the Children and the daily trials of teenage life. JP’s songs range from thoughtful social commentary to humourous love songs. JP has united with musicians Jesse Gold and Jack Emblem to form the band Blacklight. 2009 was his first year playing professionally around the city in piano bars, jazz clubs and festivals. We are excited to see JP grow in the industry and welcome him tonight to Hugh’s Room.
